A Comprehensive Plan to Modernize Customs and Curb Smuggling

In continuation of the ongoing efforts and the distinguished relationships that the Association maintains with its strategic partners, and with a keen interest in enhancing cooperation with external entities and opening new horizons for the Egyptian business community, we have received information that a comprehensive plan has been prepared to develop the customs system in collaboration between the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Investment and Trade. This comes within the framework of the state’s efforts to improve the business environment and address the challenges facing the business community and investors, keeping pace with global developments in trade and customs facilitation. The plan aims to provide effective support to investors by simplifying procedures and enhancing transparency, which contributes to increasing exports, improving supply chain efficiency, and enhancing the competitiveness of the Egyptian economy.

The plan focuses on three main axes: reducing customs clearance times to lower costs and accelerate trade flows, simplifying and automating the customs system through digital transformation to facilitate procedures and improve service quality, and strengthening oversight at customs ports while curbing smuggling to protect the local market and support fair competition. Additionally, the Ministry of Finance seeks to expand the tax base by attracting new taxpayers and integrating the informal economy into the formal system, thereby increasing government revenues and supporting sustainable economic growth within an effective partnership between the government and the private sector.

Advantages:
  • Reducing customs clearance time
  • Simplifying procedures
  • Increasing exports
  • Expanding the tax base
  • Strengthening oversight and combating smuggling
